If to take into consideration developers, webOS is dead, and the decision of HP to stop manufacturer of phones and tablets based on the operating system shouldn’t influence the company in the least, according to distinguished analyst and vice president at Gartner, Ken Dulaney.
He stated that they have told developers from enterprise not to create one specific operating system. They should deploy a mobile consumer application platform, as for example Appcelerator and others, or such mobile enterprise application platform as Antenna and Sybase.
The president and CEO of service provider Gorilla Logic, Stu Stern announced that no one jumped on the train of webOS. There will not be a mass departure to push the needle onward for RIM and Microsoft. Stern doesn’t believe that the OS may form the basis for another company to more successfully against Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS.
Dulaney clarified that the application platforms he mentioned add a layer between the application code and the hardware to build the application device-specific, something that does not influence performance in the eyes of the user, according to CEO and founder of CloudBees – a cloud service provider for mobile apps, Sacha Labourey.
He explained that end users can’t tell what applications are developed by means of the application layer. Such complex applications as games really require to be coded natively.
Also Labourey said that the webOS death is not anything which will influence majority of developers.
He said that it would help mobile developers to narrow their focus. Labourey added that there are 3 tiers of OS: Android and iOS lead the race, with BlackBerry and Windows Phone following on the second tier, and MeeGo and webOS on the third he also said that HP may go to the server-side of mobile apps with its refocused and new enterprise strategy.
Stern stated that the biggest problem for developers is the lack of competition that is his mind hinder innovation.
He added that he was hoping the webOS and TouchPad ecosystem would succeed as rivalry is essential for innovation. However it is a non-event for developers. HP just didn’t wish to advertise and increase the webOS system. It wasn’t the issue they couldn’t do it, they just didn’t wish to.
