It is really easy to start using iCloud if you deploy a single Apple ID only on your own devices. But there are many families who share a single Apple ID over multiple people and gadgets, so they may buy apps and music once and render everybody in the family access. But a question is must you share the same Apple ID for iCloud also?
No, you don’t have to.
The great news is that you may go on sharing an Apple ID for iTunes buying with your family, whereas maintaining individual iCloud accounts. And even the better news, Apple absolutely approves if you doing so, thus you don’t need to feel guilty about it.
Here is how to share Apple ID for iTunes:
From your iOS 5 device or from your Lion Mac, enter iCloud’s settings. Look in System Preferences on the Mac; launch Settings on the iOS. By default, iCloud may assume on your iOS device that you wish to deploy your standard Apple ID – the same you deploy when buying apps – for iCloud, but it is not necessary to do so.
Note: On your Mac you may click Sign Out to get out of that account, although you will require to click through several friendly dialog boxes first of all. Your Mac will definitely confirm that through signing out you will lose access to Documents in the Contacts, Cloud and the like, and ask you whether you wish to keep or remove from the Mac such iCloud-stored data. Do not worry a lot, your data is secure in iCloud even if all else fails. On your iPad or iPhone, you may remove your undesired iCloud account from the bottom of Settings in the iCloud section. Tap into your iCloud account there, and then scroll to the bottom and at the end tap Delete Account.
Now, doesn’t matter on the iOS device or on the Mac, just follow steps from Apple for setting up iCloud. You may deploy an existing email address on your own, or create a new account. Once you have created your account, you will want to log into that same iCloud account on all other devices. All is necessary is that other folks of your family repeat the same process for themselves, just deploying their own email addresses.
As for example, your wife deploys one email address for iCloud and you deploy another, and you share a third for the App Store. One of you can, surely, have kept the App Store Apple ID as your iCloud account, but this approach seemed a little bit easier to keep straight.
Unfortunately, this solution will not work rather well for you in case you deploy different iOS devices but share a Mac. Notwithstanding you may configure multiple iCloud contacts, calendar and email accounts on an individual Mac, just one iCloud account per Mac may sync photos, bookmarks, documents and etc.
iMessage tip: In case the folks you share an Apple ID with will all deploy iMessage, that is a great idea to deploy you new, unique iCloud accounts for iMessage, too. iMessage, by default, will try to utilize your basic Apple ID, and sharing that ID over multiple iMessagers will lead only to some trouble. In order to change your iMessage address to an individual email address that deploy only you, go into Settings and select Messages. Then, tap Receive At, and tap on the Apple ID at the top of the screen. In the pop-up dialog which appears, select Sign Out, and then sign into your individual account instead.
